YAH Trip May 20114 Gonzales TX

We invite you to “Come and Take It” and once you do, you’ll never let it go.
The Gonzales County Courthouse is a major focal point of downtown Gonzales. Construction of the Courthouse began in 1894 and was completed in 1896. The structure originally cost $64,450. The clock tower remains as a major focal point for downtown.

Located at the intersection of N. St Joseph Street and St. Lawrence Street. The square honors the men of Gonzales that fought in the Texas Revolution. The monument (by sculptor Pompeo Coppini) was built in 1910 through the efforts of the Gonzales Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
We had great weather for our trip. Being from Texas I had forgot a lot of the history of Gonzales. The town has so much history to it.
The lady, Sandra Wolff, maiden name, McGinty, that gave our tour of the jail was actually a resident of it in her younger years. Her father was the sheriff and they actually lived in the jail building, upstairs. I do a lot of genealogy and after her history of the town and jail I remembered my cousin married a girl from the area and I asked her if she knew the family and she did. She also knew my cousin, as he would come home on week ends and spend it with the family. She wrote a book, Cherry Pie Jailbird and he is actually mentioned in the book. It is a small world we live in.

We  then  went on a drive of old homes in the area. Some are very ornate and have historical markers on them. after touring the old mansion route we went to have lunch.

We also were able to go inside one of the mansions that is still being rebuilt inside. they said they may not finish it all the way and leave it as it is. They have put central air and heat in it to help preserve it. There is a big oak out front and that is where Sam Houston made camp.

Too much history to put in the blog we suggest you take a trip to Gonzales and see for yourself.

Our trip planners did a great job as usual.  They put in lots of hours to plan our trips and they all go very smoothly, thanks to them.

Leaving the Church this morning.
First stop, Sealy Texas for coffee.

The gabled roof of the jail was lost in a storm and never replaced.

Nice place to sleep.

The time on this clock was the exact time when I took this picture. (They claim there are ghost here.)

Check out the same trunk in the photo as in this picture.

Only used three times. However still a working model.
